How to Remove Carpet Dents From Furniture: The Ice Cube Trick

Start with a compatibility test on a hidden area, then treat the dent in this sequence.

    Step 01

    Test the carpet in a hidden area

    Place one ice cube behind furniture or in a closet. Let it melt. Blot with a dry cloth and air-dry for 30 minutes. Check for colour bleeding, odour or backing damage. Proceed only if the carpet dries cleanly.

    Place ice cubes directly in the dent

    Position 2–4 ice cubes directly over the furniture indentation, spacing them evenly across the compressed area. The ice should be in contact with the carpet fibres. Use only solid cubes. Never use an iron or steam device on wet carpet.

  3. The ice cubes have melted into water that has saturated the carpet fibres, making them darker and visibly dampened.

    Allow the ice to melt completely

    Leave the ice cubes untouched and let them melt naturally. This typically takes 30–60 minutes. The slow moisture release from melting ice is gentler on carpet fibres and backing than pouring water directly. Use this only on colourfast synthetic carpet.

  6. The treated dent area fully dry, fibres fluffed and blended with surrounding carpet, no visible indentation or damp patches.

    Allow the carpet to air-dry completely

    Leave the treated area undisturbed and allow it to air-dry fully. Keep the room well ventilated by opening windows or running air conditioning. Avoid placing furniture on the spot until completely dry. Drying typically takes 2–4 hours.
