Just Moved In and Saw a Cockroach? Safe Pest-Proofing First Steps

One sighting calls for prevention, not pesticides. Remove food, water and cardboard, notify maintenance about leaks and inspect gaps. Never seal drains, vents, fire-stopping or utility penetrations. Repeated sightings need licensed pest control.

What should I do if I see one cockroach?

Start with non-chemical prevention: photograph the insect if safe, remove accessible food, water and cardboard, notify maintenance about leaks and inspect ordinary visible gaps without opening services. Never seal drains, vents, fire-rated or utility penetrations. Use only a UAE-registered consumer pesticide according to its exact label; otherwise contact licensed pest control.

Works on

residential apartments / accessible kitchen and bathroom housekeeping / ordinary visible door or skirting gaps verified as non-service openings

Use another method for

drains, vents, HVAC openings, fire stopping and utility penetrations / electrical, gas, water, telecom or concealed-service openings / door barriers that impair closing, latching, egress or a fire-door seal / unregistered, imported, unlabelled or professional-use pesticide products / pesticide use where children, pets or food cannot be protected as the label requires

What you need

Start with cleaning supplies. Buy barriers or pesticides after approval and label checks.

How to Respond Safely to a Cockroach Sighting

Use sanitation and verified exclusion. Never improvise pesticides or building alterations.

  1. A cockroach sighting being documented from a safe distance beside an unopened delivery box.

    Step 01

Document the sighting without handling it

If safe, photograph the insect from a distance and note its location. Never handle it bare-handed. Check boxes and bags before moving them inside. Repeated or daytime sightings, egg cases, widespread droppings or a musty odour require licensed pest control.

  2. Hands placing dry food in sealed containers and removing cardboard from a clean kitchen.

    Step 02

Remove accessible food and hiding material

Seal food, clean crumbs and grease using the approved surface method, empty waste and remove cardboard. Keep food-preparation surfaces pesticide-free. Never mix cleaners or treat them as pesticides. Follow labels and wash hands after handling waste.

  3. A kitchen sink and counter being dried while a small under-sink leak remains visible for maintenance.

    Step 03

Remove accessible water and report leaks

Dry sinks and counters, empty standing water and manage pet bowls normally. Photograph leaks and notify maintenance. Never dismantle plumbing, close unfamiliar valves, add drain chemicals or cover a floor drain for pest control.

  4. An ordinary baseboard gap being visually checked without applying sealant or opening services.

    Step 04

    Inspect only ordinary visible gaps

Inspect doors, screens, baseboards and cabinet edges without removing hardware. Ask management whether a gap is non-service and which barrier is approved. Never seal drains, vents, fire-stopping joints, electrical boxes, pipes, gas lines, AC openings or unknown penetrations.

  5. An approved removable sink strainer being checked for free water flow without changing the drain assembly.

    Step 05

Add only a compatible physical barrier

Install a sweep, screen repair or removable strainer only with maker and building approval. Confirm doors latch, egress stays clear, airflow remains open and water drains freely. Never remove a fire-door seal, drain cover or connected stopper.

  6. An unopened UAE-registered consumer pesticide package being checked before any use.

    Step 06

Use pesticide only by the exact registered label

Verify UAE consumer registration and confirm the intact label names cockroaches, the site and application. Follow its exact dose, placement, PPE, storage and disposal directions. Never invent gel-dot sizes or locations. Use licensed pest control when children, pets or food cannot be protected.

  7. A clean kitchen and closed observation notebook prepared for a licensed pest-control provider.

    Step 07

    Observe and escalate recurring activity

Track sightings without disturbing pesticide placements. Follow label inspection and disposal timing. Contact a Dubai Municipality-approved company for repeated or daytime sightings, egg cases, droppings, musty odour or activity across rooms. Seek urgent medical help for suspected exposure or allergic reaction.

Frequently asked questions.

What signs indicate established infestation?

Repeated sightings, daytime activity, egg cases, widespread droppings, a musty odour or activity across several rooms can indicate a larger problem. Photograph only what you can safely see and contact licensed pest control. Seek urgent medical advice for breathing symptoms, allergic reaction or suspected pesticide exposure.

Where do I place gel bait safely?

There is no universal safe gel-bait location or dot size. Verify UAE registration and use only the indoor sites, dose, spacing and PPE printed on the product's intact label. Keep it away from food-contact surfaces, children and pets. If those conditions cannot be met, use licensed pest control.

How do cockroaches enter apartments?

Cockroaches may arrive in boxes or bags or move through ordinary building gaps and shared routes. Do not assume every visible opening is an entry point. Photograph it and ask building management before sealing anything. Never block a drain, vent, fire-stopping joint or electrical, gas, water, telecom or AC penetration.
